How do I get rid of bad breath?
BAD breath is a sensitive subject to approach, but is pretty common amongst many people.
But what causes it and how do you get rid of bad breath? Here's all you need to know...
What causes bad breath?
Food
Eating certain foods like garlic, spices and onions can cause bad breath.
After you eat these foods they enter your bloodstream and are carried to your lungs - causing bad breath.
Smoking
Tobacco products cause bad breath.
Smokers are also more likely to have gum disease - which is another cause of mouth odor.
Dental hygiene
If teeth are brushed and flossed correctly daily, food particles can stay in your mouth causing bad breath.
Your tongue also needs to be brushed - as it can also trap bacteria.
Dry mouth
Saliva helps to clean your mouth, so if your mouth is always dry this could be the cause of bad breath.
This is why people have bad breath in the morning time as many people sleep with their mouths open.
Infections
Bad breath can be the sign of a bigger problem, like tonsillitis, tooth decay, gum disease or mouth sores.

How do I get rid of bad breath?
- Hydration - Staying hydrated is key, so drink plenty of water, or green or black tea, as they contain polyphenols that eradicate sulphur compounds, so reduce bacteria in the mouth.
- Food - The foods which can improve your breath are ones that contain vitamins and minerals to keep your teeth and gums strong, and abrasive foods.
Foods such as apples, celery, and carrots will kind of “brush” the teeth, and help rid them of smelly plaque.
- Choice of toothpaste - if you’re shopping for toothpaste, avoid alcohol based mouthwashes as these dry the mouth out and only mask the smell. Use a fluoride toothpaste.
- Brushing - Gently clean your tongue once a day using a tongue scraper or cleaner.
