Shetland mum, 25, dies after taking unwell on beach as tributes paid to ‘kind-hearted’ charity worker

TRIBUTES have been pouring in for a tragic Shetland mum who died after taking ill at the beach.

We told how the 25-year-old passed away after being rushed to hospital from St Ninian’s beach.

She has now been named locally as Aylesha Meades from the island.

The mum-of-one worked for voluntary organisation Who Cares? Scotland who support young people in care.

She recently penned a passionate Facebook post about the work she did helping young people in the area.

Aylesha also once acted as an extra for hit BBC series Shetland.

Loved ones and pals have been left devastated by the shock and sudden death.



Shannon Williamson wrote: “Showed her support and she was so kind hearted and funny.

“She was going to be on my podcast before I had to postpone it, we spoke a little bit about what she was going to talk about.

“I’m sorry you never got to tell your story the way you wanted to but you raised so much awareness for kids in care and information for people who weren’t educated on that topic.

“Losing a young person in Shetland is always devastating and you truly will be missed.”

It’s understood there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death, but cops are still making enquiries.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We were made aware of the sudden death of a 25-year-old woman around 6.40am on Sunday, 11 July, on Shetland.

“The woman had taken unwell at St Ninian’s beach and was pronounced dead at hospital.

“Enquiries are ongoing.”

Emma Ritch, of Engender Scotland, passed away suddenly on Friday.

The feminist, who also sat on Rape Crisis Scotland’s Board of Trustees, devoted her life to working for equality for women.

She has been described as a “brilliant director” and a “committed, passionate and witty feminist.”
