Ordering at the bar set to return from July 19 as social distancing comes to an end in huge boost for pubs

BRITS will reportedly be able to order at the bar in boozers from July 19 as the government scrap social distancing measures.

The Prime Minister will address the nation this afternoon to set out his plans for Freedom Day - set for July 19 - that will see masks become voluntary in almost all settings and the end to hated table service only orders in pubs and bars.

He plans to tear up the Covid rule book in England on his "terminus date" - which many have dubbed Freedom Day - as restrictions are finally set to ease completely.

But Mr Johnson will warn the nation in a conference on Monday that cases will continue to soar and hospitalisations and deaths will go up in the coming weeks and months - but the time has come to live with the virus like the flu as the jab has slashed serious illness and deaths from Covid.

"I must stress that the pandemic is not over and that cases will continue to rise over the coming weeks," he will add.

"As we begin to learn to live with this virus, we must all continue to carefully manage the risks from Covid and exercise judgement when going about our lives."

Mask-wearing will become voluntary in all settings and punters will be able to drink at the bar as the requirement for table service is ditched, The Sunday Times reports.

It would see the back of masks, distanced tables, and screens in venues across the country, allowing the hospitality industry a chance to heal as they could operate at a larger capacity and serve more customers.

Large events such as festivals will also be given the green light, according to the paper.

It comes as:

  • Compulsory mask wearing will be ditched when Covid restrictions are finally relaxed on Freedom Day
  • Face masks will be a "personal choice" after July 19, a minister has confirmed
  • Boris Johnson is set to scrap the QR code sign-in requirement for pubs and restaurants to curb the number of Brits being forced to isolate through the NHS app
  • Double-jabbed Brits returning from amber-list countries 'won't have to quarantine after July 19'
  • School bubbles are set to be dropped after a senior government vaccines adviser said they risk paralysing society and bringing in a lockdown by the back door

Businesses have been exasperated with the constant shutdown of venues as a result of positive cases recorded by the NHS Test and Trace app - which was "casting the net wide" on who it pings.

Chief executive of the British Beer and Pub Association, Emma McClarkin, said pubs were "closing or greatly reducing their opening hours due to staff shortages caused by app pings", despite staff testing negative for coronavirus using quick-result tests.

But according to the publication, the need to scan QR codes when entering establishments will be axed after July 19, allowing bars and restaurants to continue operating instead of being shut after being flagged for self-isolation by Test and Trace.

The use of vaccine passports will also be assessed this week as the results of the task force reviews roll in, the Sunday Express said.

A Downing Street source told the paper that although modelling suggesting the unlocking would see a spike in cases, the UK's pioneering vaccine rollout allows the Government to be "confident there will be no risk of additional pressure on the NHS".

SIX BIG FREEDOMS PROMISED

The Prime Minister is set to address the nation on Monday to set out his plans for Freedom Day - set for July 19. He is expected to announce:

1 - No fines for not wearing masks on busses and trains but you can wear if you want.

2 - No social distancing in pubs, bars and clubs and end to table service only.

3 - No need to scan QR code to enter venues.

4 - No order to work from home - its up to firms to choose.

5 - No widespread domestic use for vaccine passports to get a pint.

6 - No more ban on mass outdoor events like festivals.

BUT THREE BIG FREEDOMS STILL TO BE ANNOUNCED LATER... HOPEFULLY:

1 - No need to quarantine for double jabbed Brits travelling back from Amber countries.

2 - No more school "bubbles" that see thousands of kids send home because a handful of cases.

3 - No more isolation for double jabbed Brits after being "pinged" for coming into contact with Covid victim - details still being argued about by Ministers.

They hope to get rid of self-isolating for close contacts with a positive case, seeing the end of the chaotic school bubble system, provided they undergo repeated tests that have a negative result.

Double-jabbed Brits are also expected to be able to return from amber list countries without having to quarantine from July 19.

It comes as Sajid Javid vowed to lift the remaining coronavirus restrictions on July 19 as he plans to make Britain the "most open country in Europe".

He wrote in the Mail on Sunday, "The economic arguments for opening up are well known, but for me, the health arguments are equally compelling.

The pandemic has hit some groups disproportionately hard. Rules that we have had to put in place have caused a shocking rise in domestic violence and a terrible impact on so many people's mental health."

A Downing Street spokeswoman told reporters, "No decisions have been made but more details will be set out soon."

Although Brits will be buzzing to get back to a taste of normality, the news is set to unnerve some senior doctors who petitioned for some restrictions to remain due to an "alarming" rise in Covid cases.

As of 9am on Saturday, there were another 24,885 lab-confirmed Covid cases, the Government confirmed, while 18 others had died within 28 days of testing positive.
