It came as they prepared to take part in the Royal Windsor Horse Show.

The horses were taken from their Hyde Park stables to summer pastures in the countryside for easier feeding.

Farriers and vets were also affected.

A source said: “There weren’t enough healthy troops left to feed them all and muck them out, especially because a lot of the guys are busy at Windsor.

"They decided to get the horses away ASAP because you don’t need as many troops to feed them and muck them out.”

But the source insisted the regiment’s Musical Ride at Windsor next week was unaffected.
