A YOUNG lad was airlifted to hospital after he plunged down the side of a supermarket escalator.

The 12-year-old was in a Sainsbury's when he fell, suffering back, abdomen and shoulder pain at roughly 5.30 on yesterday afternoon.

The boy who accidentally fell off the escalator in Maidstone, Kent, was flown by air ambulance to Kings College Hospital, London.

He is now believed to be in a serious but stable condition.

The escalator links the supermarket with a shopping mall and it is currently not clear how he fell.

The boy was treated at the scene by paramedics before the helicopter arrived to rush him to the capital.
