“WORK AT IT TOGETHER OR A MARRIAGE WILL WITHER ON THE VINE” – KARREN BRADY
Karren Brady commented: “What a few weeks the Prime Minister has had. A marriage, an affair and a break-up — though the latter two didn’t directly involve Boris Johnson but a couple of his senior Cabinet ministers.
“Hot on the heels of Matt Hancock’s marriage split — following The Sun’s revelation of his affair with aide Gina Coladangelo — Michael Gove announces he is separating from his wife after 20 years.
“This news is the last thing Boris would have wanted to hear after Hancock resigned as Health Secretary in the wake of his Covid rule breaking.
“What any leader wants is stability. And what a strange and unstable time it has been in Downing Street. No one knows the reason why Gove and Sarah Vine decided to call it a day. But Boris may have known this bombshell was waiting in the wings.”
WHAT IS GOVE’S ROLE IN CABINET?
The primary role of the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster is to provide income for the queen – the role includes administering the estates and rents of the Duchy of Lancaster, but doesn’t actually play much of a role in the day-to-day management of the estates of the royals.
Key aspects of the job include, advising the PM on developing and implementing government policy, driving forward government business and implementation including chairing and deputy chairing Cabinet, committees and implementation taskforces.
Another key role of the job is overseeing devolution consequences of EU exit and overseeing constitutional affairs and maintaining the integrity of the Union.
Under Boris Johnson as PM, Gove was instructed to “turbo-boost” plans for a no-deal Brexit.
GOVE JIBE FURY (CONTINUED)
Jenrick blasted the call - made in light of the Matt Hancock affair scandal.
He told Times Radio: "I think it's appalling if Labour have said that.
"I've not seen any evidence to suggest anything of that sort and this seems to me to be an entirely private matter for Michael Gove and his family so I don't intend to comment on that at all.
"I don't think Labour have any evidence to support that claim. It seems like that's entirely unsubstantiated. This is a personal matter.
"Michael Gove and his wife are friends of mine.
"Of course I wish them well but it's not something that we should be commenting on as politicians and it's very unfortunate that the Labour Party have chosen to make a statement like that."
GOVE JIBE FURY
Pals of Michael Gove have slammed Labour for politicising the top Tory's “sad” marriage break up.
Gove ally Robert Jenrick slammed calls from the opposition for the Cabinet Office boss to publicly declare where has been living as "appalling”.
After suggestions Mr Gove had moved out of his family home, Mr Jenrick hit back: “They have no evidence at all, it is utterly unsubstantiated.”
Shadow Home Secretary Nick Thomas-Symonds said Mr Gove "should clarify" if he's broken any social distancing rules during the breakdown of his marriage to journalist Sarah Vine.
WESTMINSTER COMES BETWEEN POLITICIANS AND THEIR FAMILIES, WROTE SARAH VINE
In a piece about former health secretary Matt Hancock’s resignation, Vine write about how Westminster life can drive a wedge between partners.
In a revealing column, she said: “It is very hard to do these high-level, high-pressure, high-stakes jobs unless you have someone prepared to take up the reins in every other department of your life.
“But the problem is that inevitably sets you on different tracks. You become so entrenched in your respective roles that you begin to drift apart.
“Westminster is a place of myriad distractions for the politician seeking refuge from his or her home life.
“And when you feel disconnected like that, and because power is such an aphrodisiac, it doesn’t take a huge leap of imagination to see how you can go from being happily married to the kind of person who gets caught so unfortunately on CCTV. Hancock’s behaviour may be shocking, but given the context it is entirely predictable.”
