The relics at the site, in Sichuan province, south-west China, were first discovered in 1929 by a local villager and date back 3000 years to the Bronze Age.

But recently the eerie looking artefacts with large pointing ears have set UFO buffs buzzing with the idea they were aliens who visited ancient China.

The growing popularity of the idea has even led to an official denial of any alien link.

"Some artistically exaggerated goddess statues cannot be said to be 'aliens,'" said Lei Yu, an archaeologist at the Sichuan Provincial Cultural Relics and Archaeology Research Institute

, officials said that despite not finding any evidence the UFOs filmed by navy pilots were aliens, that "explanation can't be definitively ruled out."

It comes as China a preparing to address UFOs at the United Nations as it launches its own probe into the strange encounters, an ex-Pentagon investigator has said.

Luis Elizondo, who headed up the secretive Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program (AATIP), said China may be attempting to take the lead amid a flurry of renewed interest in UFOs.

However, he admitted he had to be "realistic" and it would take a lot for the US to place its trust in China and Russia on such an important issue.

It is known that China have set a similar UAP task force to what has been seen in the US - planning to us artificial intelligence to track the mysterious objects hurtling through the skies.

Chinese military researchers are reported to have dubbed them "Unidentified Air Conditions" - UACs.

And the former official said it is believed China may attempt to bring the conversation about UFOs to the United Nations.

“I would love nothing more than an opportunity to work with our adversaries, our conventional adversaries- Russia, China, let’s get everybody to the table,” said Elizondo.

"I believe this is a topic that involves all of humanity. I think it affects all of us equally and yet differently, depending on our philosophical, sociological and theological belief systems."
