Cameras at the Nock Mountains, which are the westernmost and highest mountain range of the Gurktal Alps in Austria, caught two mountaineers fooling around earlier this month.

And the images have now gone viral.

The unknown man and woman decided to take a spontaneous nap on the mountain - which soon turned into a rather erotic moment.

The two initially sat next to each other and enjoyed the romantic view beyond the tree line - before the camera caught them lying naked and tightly entwined on the grass at around 12.20pm.

The unknown love birds disappeared from the webcam's sight only 20 minutes later at 12.40pm, but went viral several days later.

In Austria, any recordings of public places are tightly regulated and in most cases prohibited with severe fines for any breaches.

Ronald Schellander, from Web Media Solutions, explained that panorama and weather cameras are not considered surveillance cameras since they do not continuously transmit recordings.

He added that these types of monitoring systems usually take high-resolution photos several times per day and expressed his concern at the uncomfortable situation in which the intimate images were made public.

Schellander said: "Basically, we position cameras in such a way that no people can be recognised due to the resolution of the camera or the distance."

He said that usually, they would use the software to make sure people's faces are pixelated, and that nothing that breaches anyone's privacy was published.

However, it appears that the software did not manage to flag these images, possibly because the couple's faces could not be seen.

According to local media, there is an information board on Nockalm Road that leads to the national park, which indicated that the area is covered by cameras.

There is no further information on who the pair were and whether the couple missed the sign and were unaware of the possibility of being filmed.
