HEARTBREAKING footage shows an exhausted polar bear smeared in what looks like it's own faeces as he struggles to his feet in his enclosure.

Distressed and weak the once proud animal desperately tries to stand up from a rock where he lies covered in brown stains.

It takes the poor creature an agonising 20 seconds to scramble onto his feet, with his legs shaking.

The bear lumbers forward, smearing the ground behind him with "excrement", before grasping something from the ground.

He munches on the object as the aghast tourists express their horror at the state of the once majestic beast.

The video is said to have been shot at the Belgrade Zoo, one of the oldest in Europe which is home to an enormous 2,000 animals.

The over 270 species include polar bears, leopards, seals, chimps and tigers.

At one point the bear gazes up in desperation at the horrified tourists, audibly aghast at the horrific conditions the animal has been left in

The footage was posted to YouTube by a user who branded it "green", "horrible" and "full of bacteria and other infections".

Disgusted, they added: "We demand that this torture chamber closed or relocated to a location where the animals will get a habitat similar to that of nature! (sic)".

The upsetting footage of the bear - said to be male and in a 'sick' condition - has been viewed more than 11,000 times. One viewer commented of the scenes: "Poor bear."
