Outrage as psychoanalyst claims being white is ‘a malignant, parasitic like condition with no cure’
A WHITE psychoanalyst is being slammed for claiming that whiteness is “a malignant, parasitic-like condition” that has “no permanent cure” in an academic journal.
Dr Donald Moss wrote that whiteness is a “condition” and that it gives people “deformed appetites” to “target nonwhite people.”
In the article published in the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association last month, he branded it “nearly impossible to eliminate” as it is “foundational.”
, named “On Having Whiteness,” is available online and was shared widely on social media as users
“How do my colleagues consider this scholarship? Anyone actually take this seriously?” one clinical psychologist.
“I was skeptical so I looked it up, and yeah this is real and now I want to throw my Psychology degree in the garbage,”
“This racist vomit should be called out for what it is,”
“This is the lowest and most dangerous form of racism masquerading as academic discourse. Shameful.”
In the article, Moss states that “effective treatment” is difficult for “parasitic whiteness,” according to the abstract.
"Whiteness is a condition one first acquires and then one has—a malignant, parasitic-like condition to which "white" people have a particular susceptibility," it states.
"The condition is foundational, generating characteristic ways of being in one's body, in one's mind, and in one's world.
"Parasitic Whiteness renders its hosts' appetites voracious, insatiable, and perverse. These deformed appetites particularly target nonwhite peoples," the abstract continues.
"Once established, these appetites are nearly impossible to eliminate. Effective treatment consists of a combination of psychic and social-historical interventions."
'CHRONIC CONDITION'
It continues that we "can reasonably aim only to reshape whiteness's infiltrated appetites."
"The ravages wreaked by the chronic condition can function either as a warning ('never again') or as temptation ('great again')," Moss claims.
"Memorialization alone, therefore, is no guarantee against regression."
Moss, who teaches in the New York Psychoanalytic Institute, previously spoke on the subject at the Center for Modern Psychoanalytic Studies, according to the .
He also taught a class On Having Whiteness in February 2020 at the same center, reports.
In the outline for the class, Moss claims that whiteness is “contagious” as it can be “passed on by other infected people.”
“Biologically 'white' people have a particular susceptibility. to 'Whiteness',” the outline adds.
'This susceptibility is grounded in pre-existing hierarchical representations of self and object — in any representation that organizes self and other in a vertical relation, powerful and powerless."
He added: "For whiteness, the most perceptually available category over which to establish hierarchical relations is 'color'. Race provides 'Whiteness' its easiest target."
His bio for the American Psychoanalytic Association said that in his work, Moss has also researched how to “understand and dismantle structured forms of hatred … racism, homophobia, misogyny, and xenophobia.”
Moss’s other articles for the journal include On Hating in the First Person Plural: Thinking Psychoanalytically About Racism, Homophobia, and Misogyny and Masculinity as Masquerade.
He is set to publish a book later this year called Hating, Abhorring and Wishing to Destroy: Psychoanalytic Essays on the Contemporary Moment.
