JBSA Lackland put on lockdown after shooting outside Air Force base in San Antonio

JOINT Base San Antonio-Lackland went into lockdown on Wednesday afternoon after reports of a shooting outside one of its gates.

It was first believed that two suspects allegedly fired shots toward the Air Force base with trainees in the area.

In a press conference on Wednesday evening, however, the commander of the security forces squadron Lt. Col. Brian Loveless said it was unclear if a shooting had occurred.

There were reports of two shots fired offbase to dispatch, he said.

Yet there were no witnesses to a person shooting, Loveless added.

Officials issued a and through text messages urging all personnel to "take cover" immediately at around 12.30pm CDT.

Lockdown procedures continued as authorities hunted for suspects and to gather more information.

The base was given the "all clear" and lockdown was lifted at about 3pm local time.

The base said in a statement posted to social media that the shooting was believed to have taken place outside Valley Hi Gate on .

"JBSA emergency responders are working with the San Antonio police department to clear the area and search for the shooters," the statement added.

The incident is still being investigated.

The base is the home of US Air Force basic training.
