No.10's resident cat Larry is believed to be “away” for a few days and power hungry Palmerston took the opportunity to dash into .

But cops were quickly onto his land grab and he was escorted out and then turned tail after a brief stand-off with an officer by the door.

Mr Johnson inherited the black and white cat cat at the Foreign and Commonwealth office and his feline friend seems to have inherited his master’s ambition.

The cat was appointed Chief Mouser to the Foreign Office earlier this year after being adopted from Battersea Dogs and Cats Home.

Palmerston and his No.10 rival Larry have been fighting recently and one clash outside the Foreign Office left Larry with a paw injury which required veterinary treatment.

He was later put on bed rest for a few days after he licked his wounds.

It is not the first time Larry has got into a scrap.

He often fought with No. 11's cat Freya, who was then exiled to the countryside.
