Man arrested after bomb squad sent to investigate ‘suspicious package’ at flat in Edinburgh suburb

A MAN was arrested after bomb squads raced to investigate a "suspicious package" discovered in an Edinburgh flat.
Dozens of locals were evacuated from their homes in the Niddrie area of the city.
A police spokesman later said the device was not dangerous and posed no threat to the public.
Dramatic pictures posted on social media showed a heavily-armoured bomb disposal expert walking towards the scene alongside two soldiers.
Police confirmed an operation was ongoing after being called to the scene at 4pm this afternoon.
A spokesman from Police Scotland said: "Police in Edinburgh attended an address in Niddrie after concerns were raised about a suspicious package earlier today.
“Specialist engineers from the EOD [Explosive Ordnance Disposal] attended. The surrounding homes have been evacuated as a precaution while engineers assess the package.
"Police have detained a 40-year-old man after a suspicious package was found at an address."
Niddrie is three miles south-east of the Scottish capital's city centre.
