A HEROIC police dog is fighting for his life after leaping off a wall while chasing two people suspected of beaten an elderly woman and stealing her handbag.

Nero, a six-year-old German shepherd, broke his neck in two places after jumping over a fence and down a 12 ft drop on the other side.

He fearlessly chased the two suspects but landed badly, according to his handler.

Courageous Nero was pursuing the suspects in Watford, in the early hours Thursday morning, with his handler from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire dog section.

Handler PC Clive Warncken, said they had no idea there was a three and a half metre drop on the other side of the fence.

A spokesman for the unit said: "Nero was immediately taken to a vet where it was discovered he had sustained two fractures to his neck.
