He fearlessly chased the two suspects but landed badly, according to his handler.

Courageous Nero was pursuing the suspects in Watford, in the early hours Thursday morning, with his handler from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire dog section.

Handler PC Clive Warncken, said they had no idea there was a three and a half metre drop on the other side of the fence.

A spokesman for the unit said: "Nero was immediately taken to a vet where it was discovered he had sustained two fractures to his neck.

"The next few days are crucial for Nero who was injured doing what he loved, servicing his community and tracking down baddies."

The unit thanked Twitter users for all the well-wishes to police dog Nero.

They tweeted: "He is receiving ongoing treatment at the moment and remains stable".

Detectives investigating the incident are appealing for witnesses and information.

Temporary Detective Constable, Puneet Netar, said: "I understand this incident may cause some concern in the local community and I would like to reassure people that we are doing all we can to investigate what happened and trace those involved, who are not thought to be from the local area.";
