Epileptic driver who ignored medics’ warning to stay off road jailed after killing pedestrian

AN epileptic motorist killed a pedestrian after having a fit at the wheel despite repeated warnings that he should not drive.
Stuart Lusher, 56, had a seizure while stopped at traffic lights which caused him to suddenly mount the pavement in his Mazda SUV.
Passer-by Phil Westnott, 48, was hit from behind, suffering a catastrophic head injury as he was trapped under the car and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The tragedy in Merton, South West London, happened as Lusher, of Sutton, was driving to visit his wife in hospital.
A police probe revealed he had a history of epilepsy and chronic sleep apnoea, and had ignored numerous warnings from medical professionals not to drive.
He admitted causing death by dangerous driving and was jailed for 3½ years at Kingston crown court on Wednesday.
He was also banned from driving for life.
Det Sgt Jeff Edwards, of the Metropolitan Police, said: “Mr Lusher’s decision to drive, despite warnings from medical staff, resulted in a terrible collision that cost an innocent man his life.”
He also paid tribute to the victim’s family “for their dignity and courage during this difficult investigation”.
