ARMED police stormed a high street and arrested a man who they thought was carrying a weapon - while pointing submachine guns at his head.

The officers were seen surrounding a man lying on the ground pointing a gun at his head, while another knelt beside him with a taser pressed into the suspect's back.

The 30-year-old man was arrested in Ramsgate, Kent, as the officers dressed in helmets and carrying rifles rushed to the scene.

But it turned out to be a fake weapon and he was arrested on suspicion of possessing an imitation firearm.

A Kent police spokeswoman Scarlet Jones said: "Kent Police was called to a report of a disturbance at a private address in Abbots Hill, Ramsgate at 8.23am.

"Firearms officers attended the scene.

"A 30-year-old man from Ramsgate was arrested on suspicion of possession of an imitation firearm. He remains in custody."

Police are not looking for anyone else connected to the incident and inquiries are ongoing.

The arrest comes less than 24 hours after an RAF serviceman was threatened during an alleged knifepoint abduction attempt at a base in Marham, near Kings Lynn, Norfolk.

Norfolk Police have said they are "unable to discount terrorism" as a motive for the attempted kidnapping.

The airman had been out jogging near the base yesterday afternoon when two men of "Middle Eastern descent" attempted to abduct him.

The two men are now on-the-run and RAF personnel have been warned not to wear their uniforms in public and "keep a low profile".

A few hours later 100 miles away in Brighton members of the public tweeted a photo of a second man being arrested after brandishing a "massive" knife in the streets.

Police said cops made the arrest at around 1:15pm after threatening the knifeman with a taser.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: "Local neighbourhood officers arrived at the scene within minutes and a Taser was drawn, at which point the suspect dropped the knife.

"The Taser was not deployed.

"The road was temporarily closed while officers were in attendance and the scene was made safe.

"A 35-year-old man from Brighton has been arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon and is being transferred to hospital with knife wounds, which are believed to be self-inflicted.

"The matter was dealt with swiftly and no other members of the public were harmed."
