INSULT TO HEROES

Shocking moment thug took a running kick at Battle of the Somme wreaths at cenotaph

The suited man was tracked down and fined £90 for the 'disrespectful' vandalism in Manchester

A DRUNK man has been filmed kicking over poppy wreaths laid in public to commemorate The Battle of the Somme.

Shocking CCTV footage released by Manchester City Council showed the 31-year-old performing a running kick on the display.

The broken wreath is seen crashing into another memorial as he and the friend wander off without looking back.

The suited man - who was accompanied by a friend - has now been fined £90 and offered to undertake work for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.

Pat Karney, a Manchester City Council city centre spokesperson, said the incident occurred at the Cenotaph in St Peter's Square.

He added: "We have CCTV cameras running 24-7 at the Cenotaph and anyone who disrespects the memory of the people who fought for Manchester will be caught and reported to the police.

"I hope the man who did this realises what a grave insult it was to those who fought for this country."
