Donna told how the seemingly suicidal bird sent feathers flying as it came crashing through the windscreen after coming at the car head on – hitting herself and the front seat passenger.

And the mum described the terrifying situation as she tried to pull the car with her family in safely over to the side of the road from the motorway’s middle lane.

She told The Sun: “I was driving from Blackpool back to Chester on the M55.

“I was in the middle lane, with a car on each side, when I saw a Canadian goose coming towards my car – head on!

“So I braced myself, held onto the steering wheel and that’s when the impact happened.

“The bird hit me in the shoulder – as well as my daughter who was sitting in the front seat.

“Glass was thrown all over with feathers, blood and guts.

“My youngest daughter and grandson were splattered in guts from the bird.”

Photos of the aftermath show the bird lying in a crumpled heap in between the front two seats of the car with shattered glass scattered around it.

Donna continued: “I stayed calm, put my hazard lights on and drove carefully to the hard shoulder, avoiding causing a collision with any other vehicles.

“No one even stopped to help!”

Everyone in the car suffered from minor cuts and bruises, but luckily nobody was seriously hurt in the incident – including Donna’s younger daughter who is 31 weeks pregnant.

Thanks to the mum’s calm driving, the goose was the only one not to walk away from the bizarre collision

The cool-headed mum added: “We were told if I had swerved we would not be here today.

“Thankfully I had the opportunity to do skid car training whilst my hubby was in the army.”

Cops praised her calmness behind the wheel after she managed to pull the car safely over after the collision – which happened at 70mph.

Lancs Road Police said: “This happened at about 20:30 hours yesterday on the eastbound M55 between junction 3 and 1.

“The Vauxhall was travelling in lane 2 at around 70 mph overtaking a car in lane 1.

“The occupants of the car were very lucky and the driver did extremely well keeping control of the car and get onto the hard shoulder.

“The goose was interviewed by officers at the scene but decided to use his right to silence.”
