Teen drowned despite his friends' best efforts to save his life
A TEEN drowned as his friends desperately tried to save him after he went for a dip in a lake on the hottest day of the year.
The 19-year-old struggled after he went for swim in the freezing water yesterday evening.
Two girls dived in to Lammas Lake near Staines, Surrey, in a failed attempt to rescue their friend.
They swam back to dry land where emergency services were called, and police and a specialist dive team arrived to try and save the teen.
Tragically his body was pulled from the murky water two hours later and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
His tragic death happened on the same day 16-year-old Jack Pullen drowned in Greater Manchester.
The youngster was in shallow water when a strong current pulled him under.
A 46-year-old man died in Burton-upon-Trent, Staffs, last night after jumping into a fast-flowing river.
A spokesman for Surrey Police said he the 19-year-old who drowned in Lake Lammas yesterday went for a dip as temperatures were still over 30 degrees.
The police spokesman said: "Surrey Police officers were called to the lake off Wraysbury Road at 5.50pm by the South East Coast Ambulance Service following reports of concern for the safety of the man in the water.
"Officers and Surrey Fire and Rescue Service's water search team were assisted by a helicopter from the National Police Air Service and SECAMB in the search. The body was then recovered at around 8pm by divers from Specialist International Group."
The death was treated as unexplained with no third party involvement and his family were informed.
A post mortem examination will be held and an inquest opened and adjourned in the next few days.
The death prompted warnings not to enter waterways as even with the scorching temperatures, the water remains freezing cold just a few feet down sending people into shock before going under the water.
