DOUBLE YELLOW WHINES

Workmen painted no-parking double yellows around line of cars after stand-off with nursery staff

Residents claim nursery staff members are parking over driveways and making their road unsafe

FED-up council contractors have painted double yellow lines around cars it is claimed are "inconsiderately" blocking driveways every day of the week.

The cars are regularly parked in Clink Road, Frome, Somerset, to the annoyance of residents who say the nursery staff are making the road dangerous.

One resident, Norman Yeaman, said Somerset County Council contractors arrived to paint double yellows to restrict parking in the road but found nursery staff cars lined up.

The contractors had to paint the road up to each car then go away, leaving gaps in the double yellows along the street.

He said: "We've been campaigning for some time to have these yellow lines installed. Cars have been blocking the drives of residents and have made the road unsafe."

He claimed the contractors, Skanska, working on behalf of Somerset County Council, had approached the nursery staff but they refused to move their vehicles.

Norman added clients of the nearby nursery were parking across driveways or on either side, reducing visibility.

"Before the yellow lines were installed nursery clients were reversing out of the nursery car park and out past the parked cars belonging to staff with no visibility endangering their child in the rear seats.

"One 80-year -old resident who lives along the street said that he used to fear for his life when driving out. I've seen near misses along that road without the yellow lines in place."

But helpers Pepperbox Nursery claim residents and contractors were being "childish".

Manager Jo Millard, said "We're not happy about it because we had no notice they were due to be painted. It has made life very difficult for us.

"The majority of parents that use our service are working and so come on a tight schedule and can't afford to walk for around five or ten minutes.

"Often they have to carry their babies in their arms, something which is very difficult if you have two children or more and need to bring bags to the nursery too.

"We do have a small car park on-site but it can only fit around three or four cars in it. We have 123 clients on roll and 21 staff members here so are very busy."

She claimed no one came and asked staff to move their cars when Skanska painted around parked vehicles.

"The next step for us now is the owner of the nursery writing in to Somerset County Council to notify them of our concerns."
