Cops forced to smash car window to rescue distressed Yorkshire Terrier overheating in summer heatwave
The owner was tracked down and given some words of warning by police
POLICE were forced to smash a car window after a dog had been left in the heat ahead of what could be the hottest day of the year so far.
Temperatures could reach up to 35 degrees celsius today, and as the heat was building yesterday little Gizmo was spotted looking distressed in the locked car by a passing member of the public.
An officer in Nottingham was called yesterday morning, and made the decision to smash the window to get the Yorkshire Terrier out of the baking car.
The owner of the car was found and given "strong words" of advice about the dangers of keeping dogs in cars on hot days.
A police spokesman said: "Please do not leave dogs in cars - even for a few minutes - as temperatures inside vehicles can rise rapidly, which can make dogs very distressed.
"When the weather is warm owners should always ensure that your pets have plenty of cool, fresh drinking water available to them."
The rescue of the little dog came a day before warnings were being issued for Brits planning to be out and about in the sunshine.
Not taking care in the sun could mean the difference between “life and death” today as temperatures look set to hit a sweltering 35 degrees celsius.
People across the country will bask in tropical conditions on Tuesday – set to be the hottest day of the year so far.
Parts of the South East could see temperatures climb as high as 35C – close to the record for July of 36.7C.
As the temperature climbs to highest yet this year, charity the St John Ambulance has issued a stark warning urging Brits to take particular care in the baking heat.
The charity is telling people to watch out for headaches, dizziness and cramp – which can all be signs of heat exhaustion and stroke.
