The incident, reported by the People's Daily, has since been confirmed by government officials.

But it is not the first time there have been fatal incidences involving lifts in at construction sites with concerns previously raised around workplace health and safety at Chinese work sites.

Eleven workers were killed and another six were injured when a lift plunged to the ground at a construction site in Wuxi 2007.

The group were in the lift when it lost control on the eleventh floor of a 32-storey complex.

Six were killed instantly with another five dying of their injuries soon after.

Another lift-related incident claimed the lives of 19 workers in Wuhan in 2012.

The workers, all painters, were in the lift when the cables broke.

Work-related accidents reportedly killed 75,500 people in China in 2011.
