Where is Prince Philip buried?

PRINCE Philip, husband and consort to Queen Elizabeth II, passed away at the age of 99 on April 9, 2021.

The Duke of Edinburgh was married to Her Majesty for 73 years and was often referred to as the bedrock of the royal family. But where was the Iron Duke buried?

Was Prince Phillip buried or cremated?

In accordance with tradition, most senior members of the royal family are buried, not cremated. The Duke of Edinburgh therefore was buried.

The last royal family member to be cremated was Princess Margaret.

According to , this was because Margaret wanted to be buried next to her father George VI at the Royal Vault in Windsor Castle  - but there was not enough room.

The Royal Vault is a burial chamber located beneath St George's Chapel in the grounds of Windsor Castle.

The vault was constructed between 1804 and 1810 on the instruction of King George III, and since then, senior members of the Royal Family have been placed in the vault after their passing.

Traditionally at royal funerals, the coffin is lowered into the vault through an opening in the floor of St George's Chapel.

On September 8, 2022 Queen Elizabeth II passed away.

The date of Her Majesty's funeral is yet to be confirmed - but is expected to take place at Westminster Abbey on September 19.

Prince Philip will be moved to lie beside the Queen following her state funeral.

Details of burial arrangements for the couple were disclosed after the Duke of Edinburgh’s death in April 2021.

A plan was put in place for the pair to eventually be placed side by side in the event of the Queen’s own death - it is understood Philip will be moved to the King George VI Memorial Chapel within St George’s with the Queen so they can be buried together. 

They will join her parents, George VI and The Queen Mother, as well as The Queen’s sister Margaret and various former monarchs.
