Turkish President calls for street protests against military coup attempt using FACETIME

Embattled Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan has made an appearance on CNN Turkey via Facetime.

In the shambolic message the Islamist president urged people to take to the streets to protest against a coup attempt by what he described as a minority faction within the military.

The strongman president vowed that those involved in the plot would be met with the necessary response, as a reporter held her phone up to the studio cameras so he could be heard.

He told a CNN Turk reporter that Turkish people loyal to their government must gather in public squares to show their disgust at the attempted military takeover.

Some Turks clearly heard the presidents’ words and have begun gathering in squares in the country’s two largest cities – Ankara and Istanbul.

But Erdogan supporters were not the only people taking to the streets, opponents of Erdogan’s regime have also taken to the street to show their support for the military.

Erdogan said he believed the attempted coup would be over within a "short time" and said those responsible would pay a heavy price in the courts.

"I certainly believe that coup plotters will not succeed," he said, as a reporter held a phone up to the camera.

It was the president first reaction to the move by the Turkish armed forces.

"I urge the Turkish people to convene at public squares and airports. I have never believed in a power higher than the power of the people.
