Why is Matt Gaetz being investigated?
In March 2021, The New York Times reported that Gaetz was being investigated by the Justice Department over whether he had a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old and paid for her travel.
Gaetz denied that he ever had a relationship with any underage girls and said the allegations against him were as searing as they were false.
The investigation led to the arrest and plea deal of his former associate, Joel Greenberg, who is now serving a 10-year sentence.
Gaetz said he was a victim of the probe headed by David McGee of the DOJ, and that the department was trying to "smear my name."
The case against Gaetz was dropped without charges in 2023.
At the same time, Gaetz was the subject of a House Ethics Committee investigation over charges of sex trafficking, misusing political funds, and inappropriate behavior on the House floor.
Gaetz has also denied these accusations.
Gaetz resigned from the House shortly after Trump nominated him to be the attorney general, meaning he no longer falls under their jurisdiction.
