234 people have died in French terror attacks in last 18 months – more than in the previous 100 years
A look back at the past two years of terror as France is devastated by yet another attack
FRANCE was last night the victim of yet another terror attack, bringing the grim death toll to 234 - and counting.
A maniac - thought to be Isis-related - deliberately drove a lorry into a crowd of people celebrating Bastille Day, killing 84 and leaving at least 50 others in a critical condition.
The driver, identified as 31-year-old Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel, was shot dead by police at the scene.
It was the fifth attack carried out by terrorists on French soil in less than two years.
January 2015: Charlie Hebdo:
Two brothers, Saïd and Chérif Kouachi, forced their way into the offices of the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in Paris.
Armed with assault rifles and other weapons, they killed 11 people and injured 11 others in the building.
They gunned down a police officer outside the office.
A further five were killed and 11 others wounded in related attacks in the days after.
June 2015: Man beheaded by employee:
Yassin Salhi, 35, murdered his boss Herve Cornara in Isere, France, before displaying his boss's head outside the plant surrounded by Islamic flags.
The crazed delivery man was later arrested and jailed, eventually hanging himself in his prison cell.
November 2015: Stade de France and the Bataclan theatre:
Suicide bombings and shootings in coordinated attacks in cafes, bars, a rock concert and a stadium in Paris left 130 people dead.
It was the worst terrorist assault on Europe in a decade.
Most of the attackers were killed on the night but some suspects are still on the run.
The coordinator of the attacks Belgian extremist Abdelhamid Abaaoud, 27, died along with his female cousin in a police raid in the Paris suburb of Saint-Denis days later.
Police officer and wife killed:
Jean-Baptiste Salvaing and his wife were stabbed repeatedly in the throat and stomach by jihadi Larossi Abballa.
The knife-wielding killer lived locally and was a convicted Islamic extremist, who was sentenced to three years in 2013 for "association with criminals preparing terrorist acts".
Bastille Day celebrations:
At least 84 people, including more than ten children, were killed when a crazed driver ploughed his lorry into crowds celebrating Bastille Day.
The driver, French-Tunisian Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel, 31, was shot dead by police.
Guns and a grenade found inside the lorry were reported to be fakes.
