The holidaymaker, who damaged his wrist following his brave jump, told Sky News about the mass killing that has shocked the world.

He said:  "We heard lots of commotion, shrieking and shouting and then we saw a truck coming down the promenade, probably at 30 or 40mph, careering from side to side.

"Obviously everybody was running and very concerned about this.

"We didn't know what to do so we turned around as everybody else did.

"It got quite close to us so I decided to jump over the wall of the promenade and landed on the concrete which was a bit further down than I anticipated.

"We were very lucky."

Laurence revealed he briefly lost his partner after they both leapt over the wall at Promenade Des Anglais.

After being reunited, the pair sprinted back to their apartment when they heard gun fire on the street.

"I wouldn't wish it on anyone, that's for sure.

"So much happens on instinct, whatever you plan to do just kicks in and you run."

Murderer Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel, 31, ploughed his 19-tonne truck through a crowd of revellers who had gathered to watch fireworks at around 10:30pm local time.

After mowing down dozens of people, the brainwashed thug exited his vehicle and opened fire on the crowd before being shot and killed by police.

Another Brit, Alex Bates, 69, from Northamptonshire, described the moment he and his wife heard the gunfire.

He said: "After the firework display had finished we walked up to the square and within literally minutes there was absolutely panic - there was a mass of people, hundreds of people, who came screaming into the square.

"We did hear noises which we thought may have been fireworks after the firework display by individuals, but it may have been the shots that we heard and certainly not the fireworks.

"We could see the terror on people's faces and we then decided that there was no option but to run right out and get shelter."

Alec, who now lives in Hua Hin, Thailand, said he thought he was going to be killed.

He said: "We actually thought that we were going to be mowed down by gunfire - we expected something like that because of the way people were moving.

"There were literally so many people - hundreds of people - terrorised, and in a situation like that you don't really know what's going on, you just don't know where to go.

"It was the worst moment of my life, without any doubt, because you really did think you were going to be killed and that's the bottom line. That's the terrible part of it all."
