Theresa May spends first night as PM in Westminster flat as David Cameron holds up her move into No10
Cameron family unable to pack up all of their belongings in 48 hours leaving the new Prime Minister to swap Downing Street for Westminster flat
THERESA May has delayed her move into Downing Street because the Camerons haven’t been able to pack up in time, The Sun can reveal.
The new PM’s sudden takeover left her predecessor with just 48 hours’ notice to leave the two storey family flat above No11.
Despite recruiting a team of aides to help, the Cameron family feared they wouldn’t complete the move by the time Mrs May took power on Wednesday night.
Instead, the new Premier offered to stay in her Westminster flat with husband Philip for a few more days.
The nearby property was made fully secure and put under armed guard when she was first made Home Secretary in 2010.
A No10 source said: “They are adults, there have been conversations between them, and there was no desire from Theresa to rush anyone out”.
A friend of the Cameron family added: “David and Samantha just needed more time to pack up, and Theresa was really accommodating”.
It has also emerged that removal vans seen at the back of Downing Street on Tuesday were not taking away all of the Camerons’ possessions, but just delivering dozens of cardboard packing boxes for them.
The vans are making a series of trips between Westminster and the Cameron family’s new £17m town house in the exclusive Holland Park area of West London.
Amid Cabinet hirings and firings yesterday, Mrs May also hosted her first reception in No10 for brave cops.
