Her owner Katie Kidd said: “My husband was walking Dodo down our street in New Town when he saw a Staffie.

“Both dogs were on a lead.

“My husband put himself between the big dog and the pup but before he knew it, his arm was yanked up and the dog had Dodo in his mouth, violently shaking her from side to side.

“When he finally dropped her he had ripped her leg clean off.

“Thanks to my husband's quick actions, Dodo survived and was operated on soon after, but it was touch and go for a while.”

Mrs Kidd’s husband, Adrian, 43, was walking Dodo in Harsnett Road, in New Town on Monday night at about 6.20pm when the horror attack happened.

The owner of the dog apologised and left the scene and hasn’t been in touch since.

Vets bills have stacked up to more than £2,000 after Jack-huahua Dodo needed stitching up.

Now the tiny pet is getting used to life on three paws.

The family, which has also has a pet rabbit, a cat and a duck, had planned to take out pet insurance this weekend.

Mrs Kidd : “We’ve only had her five weeks and she was so full of life.

“She was the loveliest little thing. She can hardly move now, she’s not eating - it is just horrendous for her and for us.”

Essex police have told her no criminal action can be taken because no human was harmed.

She added: “I don't want this to be a witch hunt and I know a perfectly lovely Staffie, so it's nothing against this breed.

What if it is a child next time?”

I don't want this to be a witch hunt and I know a perfectly lovely Staffie, so it's nothing against this breed."

Mrs Kidd has called for dog owners to be aware of the attack and to make sure they have pet insurance.

She added: “We’re intelligent enough people. We know pet insurance is a ‘must’ but we didn’t for a second think our little puppy would be in danger for a long time.”
