SCHOOL BASH SMASH

Ferrari and Mercedes carrying young students crash en route to school prom and suffer £40,000 in damages

Cars collided on a road notorious for Fast and Furious-style drag races

A FERRARI driver had a lucky escape after crashing into a Mercedes while taking part in a school prom supercar craze.

The £215,000 Ferrari 458 – which has a top speed of 210mph – rammed into the back of a Mercedes C63 AMG on a road notorious for Fast and Furious-style drag races.

Both cars were hired by British Bangladesh teens celebrating the end of their compulsory school days.

Older relatives chauffeur 16-year-old’s to their National Record of Achievement prom in hired sports cars.

Amazingly, no one was injured in the crash on Tuesday afternoon.

Pictures emerged of the severe damage both cars suffered on Royal Albert Way, east London.

Boy racers have used the 50mph dual-carriageway near City Airport as a late night illegal racing hotspot for years.

The Ferrari suffered £25,000 worth of damage while the Mercedes would cost up to £15,000 to repair

Mohammed Rahman, boss of Platinum VIP UK luxury car hire service, confirmed the firm had hired out both cars.

He said the Ferrari had suffered an estimated £25,000 worth of damage while the Mercedes would cost up to £15,000 to repair.

The drivers – who are both over 29 – are now facing insurance bills of between £3,500 and £5,000 on the excess.

People hiring cars for the prom are offered £400 deals which allow them to take Ferraris out for a few hours.

Mohammed, 31, told The Sun: “We found out about the crash on Instagram before the drivers even called us.

“The kid in the Ferrari and the kid in the Mercedes are probably from the same school and were travelling back together from the prom.

Royal Albert Way is a straight dual carriageway with a long history of speeding and dangerous driving.

Joe Slater, 23, was killed after his Ford Sierra Cosworth hit a wall at high speed on the road in August 2010.

Councillors were last year given new powers to crack down on drivers who race or perform stunts in the area.

It allows police and the council to hand on-the-spot fines to drivers causing a nuisance with revving engines, booming music and screeching tyres.

Scotland Yard said: “Police were called at 17:10 on Tuesday to reports of a collision between two cars on Royal Albert Way.

“There were no reports of injuries.”

There is no suggestion that the drivers of the Ferrari and the Mercedes were taking part in illegal racing.

Newham Council said it had issued more than 200 warnings to motorists spotted at car meets in the area since the end of May.

Four fixed penalty notices of £100 have been handed out to drivers watching or taking part in races.

Councillor Forhad Hussain said: “We have been able to provide our residents with welcome relief from the incessant revving of engines and anti-social behaviour associated with these gatherings.”
