With the game in the phone's centre, the man's face is just visible in a small bubble in the top right hand corner as he captures a wild Rattata.

He can be heard telling a friend he is going to "check it out", walking up near a bridge.

But his footsteps are quickly replaced by the sound of a huge splash.

The phone's screen then goes blank with it going to the locked screen.

The embarrassed Pokemon Go player can be heard swearing before bursting into laughter, saying "that was funny".

The entire incident was caught on live-streaming with the gamer later saying: "I did not realise that was water".

A man purporting to be the gamer in the viral video wrote on Reddit, saying the video was completely real.

He wrote: "I'm the idiot in the video and my phone is still in rice. Really glad I caught it on stream cause it's one of the funniest/dumbest things I've ever done."

He also said he had been forced to resort to battery packs with his plan also taking a hit.

Commenting on the video, he said: "Bought two charge packs for the sake of Pokemon GO and incurred about $60 of overage charges while streaming/playing on 4G."

"Might take a break from streaming it until I fix my phone/potentially get an unlimited data plan"

He said he still had high hopes for the resuscitation of his phone.
