He also said in one message during the run-up to the EU referendum: “Most MPs are risk takers to one degree or another.

“Usually in the areas of money, sex, political opportunism.

“Add in the adrenaline, the attention u get, and the time away from family  . . . toxic mix”.

In a message sent the day before the EU vote, Crabb described a sex act he would like to perform on the woman, who is in her 20s.

But during his leadership bid, he emphasised his core values of “resilience, optimism, humility” and presented himself as a family man.

The woman receiving Crabb’s messages met him through his politics several years ago and struck up a friendship.

It was only recently the messages turned sexual.

In some of their early exchanges Crabb, then Welsh secretary, discussed the resignation of Brooks Newmark after a newspaper caught him sending naked snaps to a reporter posing as an Tory activist in 2014.

He told her that Newmark was a “pretty messed up guy” and wrote that “people trip up in all kinds of ways”.

Crabb often texted the woman while he was working.

He even sent her pictures from inside the cabinet - despite David Cameron bringing in rules against phones in the meetings.

The messages were passed on to The Times.

Last night Mr Crabb had no comment — only to defend his remarks about MPs being risk-takers.

He said: “I mean, that’s a true observation, isn’t it?”
