British Transport Police say a 'precautionary closure' was in place amid claims that a 'suspicious package' had been found
BAKER street underground station was evacuated following a "bomb scare".
Hundreds of passengers were cleared from the platforms just before 4pm and trains did not stop at the station.
British Transport Police said a "precautionary closure" was in place after a "suspicious package" had been discovered.
Transport for London confirmed the evacuation was ordered due to a "security alert" and said the item was safe following an investigation.
A spokesman said: "Officers have been called to Baker Street London Underground station on Thursday, 7 July following a security alert.
“The station has currently been evacuated as a precaution.
“The incident was reported to BTP at 3.59pm.”
A Transport for London spokesman said the station reopened at 5.20pm.
The disruption has sparked chaos for rush hour commuters on the Circle, Metropolitan and Hammersmith and City lines with "severe delays" as a result.
