Pictures and video shared on social media during the day showed at least two of the giant reptiles on the loose.

Cops were appealing for information around any other sightings.

The huge snake was found in Inverclyde, Scotland, on Tuesday, by a group of workers in hi-vis.

A number of other posts on social media claimed several other sightings of similar-sized snakes across the town, in west-central Scotland.

Cops responded to reports but say only one has been recovered so far.

The 14ft beast is currently being treated at a local vets.

A cop spokesperson said: "Police Scotland report that a large snake was found earlier today in Greenock.

"The snake, which is approximately 14’ long is currently being examined and cared for at a local veterinary practice.

"Local social media posts have highlighted this incident with photographs and commentary around the find, and at this stage there have been a number of other similar reports relating to snakes being spotted in the local community.

Inspector Paul Thompson, from the local police force, added: “Officers are currently dealing with the reports of a number of sightings of large snakes in the Greenock and Gourock area.

"I would urge anyone who may come across a snake not to approach it, but to call police reporting its position. At this stage we are carrying out local enquiries in order to establish if anyone is missing any snakes."

The discovery comes just weeks after three pythons and a cat were found

The SPCA were alerted to the animal bodies after the first snake was discovered in Lanarkshire woods.

The other two reptiles were found in the same area near Carstairs just days later.

And when the SPCA attended the second call they also found the body of a cat nearby.
