SUN SAYS:

Farage leaves an impressive legacy and can boast spectacular success after Brexit vote

We respected his ability to voice the public mood, but The Sun has had many differences with him

When we are thriving outside the EU we will have Farage to thank for the opportunity

TO many he was a hate figure. To others, a joke. But Nigel Farage had the last laugh on his detractors.

He has ended his career as Ukip leader a historically more significant politician than Gordon Brown, Ed Miliband, Nick Clegg, William Hague, Michael Howard and a host of others.

Unlike theirs, Farage’s leadership ended in spectacular success - his sole aim of UK independence achieved.

We respected his ability to voice the public mood, but The Sun has had many differences with him. He was divisive, sometimes offensive.

Having forced David Cameron into a referendum, Farage was perhaps the greatest threat to his own cause. Plenty who were inclined to Leave voted Remain because they couldn’t be on his side.

But most of the 17million-plus Leavers did not vote for him. They voted for British sovereignty.

When we are thriving outside the EU we will have Farage to thank for the opportunity - no matter how hard it may be for many to stomach.

Migrants folly

Theresa May provoked fierce criticism after she failed to confirm whether EU migrants could stay in the country

WILL Britain EVER deport millions of EU migrants? Of course not.

So the Home Office’s assertion that we should refuse to guarantee their right to stay until the EU gives expat Brits the same deal is nonsense. As well as plain wrong.

These EU nationals have made their lives here. The vast majority work hard and do not deserve the stress of their futures being thrown into doubt.

The Leave lobby highlighted Britain’s failure to cope with rapid population increase. It campaigned, and won, on future immigration controls. Only Remain politicians have stoked fears of expulsions.

Theresa May would do well not to be the sole Tory leadership candidate unwilling to put EU migrants’ fears to rest.

If they were working here legally by June 23, they should be told they can stay. The Government could rule on it today.

George’s U-turn

Now is the time for Osborne to ensure future prosperity for Britain

GEORGE Osborne played dirtier than anyone before the referendum.

His apocalyptic warnings culminated in the infamous Brexit “punishment” budget. Now even Germany’s finance minister admits our Chancellor flew him over to bully voters.

It is good then to see Mr Osborne accepting defeat with some grace, and turbo-charging Britain’s bid for a new era of long-term prosperity.

A corporation tax cut to entice job-creating firms is a good start.

“We’ve got to get on a plane and sell Britain to the world,” he says.

Exactly right. Get on with it.

WE’VE given Chris Evans a lot of stick over the new Top Gear.

Credit to him, then, for recognising he was the weak link and calling it a day.

The show has been limping along in the slow lane - and he was a turn-off.
