TORY front-runner Theresa May wants a “proper contest” in the race to be PM — and insists she can be trusted on a Brexit.
The Home Secretary said it was vital other candidates are heard despite calls for them to make way to help party unity if she easily wins the first round.
She said yesterday: “There should be a contest.
“I think it’s important that members have their opportunity to have their say.
“And obviously I hope I’m one of the candidates that will go forward to the membership.”
She urged doubters “look at my record” – adding: “I’m somebody that gets on with the job, but I’m also somebody who says it as I see it and actually delivers on what I say.”
And she insisted that the next Prime Minister wouldn’t just be a “Brexit Prime Minister” but a Prime Minister who “can govern for the whole of the country” on issues such as social justice.
She said she could be trusted to take Britain out the EU despite voting for Remain, reiterating “Brexit means Brexit”.
She urged doubters “look at my record”, adding: “I’m somebody that gets on with the job . . . and actually delivers.”
William Hill offered 1/50 on the next PM being a woman as Ms May and Andrea Leadsom moved well ahead of Michael Gove, Stephen Crabb and Liam Fox in the polls.
All five will pitch to the backbench Tory 1922 Committee tonight before chasing votes from the 2020 Group of MPs.

The Home Secretary, favourite to be new PM, said the UK “may well see” a rush of EU migrants before Brexit.
And she sparked a furious reaction from Labour’s Yvette Cooper by refusing to assure the three million EU nationals already here that they can stay.
“We will need to look at this question. There is no change at the moment,” she said.
Mrs May, who had declared for Remain but did not campaign for it, said: “We must regain more control of the numbers of people who come here.”
