A LION leaps over a stream — just in case there are any crocodiles lurking nearby.

The 600lb beast was captured avoiding the water by photographer Grant Atkinson, 52, in Serengeti National Park, Tanzania.

He said: “Male lions are very agile for their size.”

He added: “I have seen many African mammals try to avoid open water, no matter how shallow it is.

“It is most likely a behaviour brought about by the presence and threat of crocodiles.

“Whilst there are not usually any large crocodiles in this part of the Serengeti, it is nonetheless a good practice for the lion to be cautious of open water.

Cubs instinctively relax when their mothers pick them up.

Lions pick their cubs up by the scruff of the neck and gently hold them in her mouth when transporting to a safe place.
