On Sunday, July 21, 2024, Joe Biden announced his withdrawal from the 2024 presidential race.
On X he : "My fellow Democrats, I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus all my energies on my duties as President for the remainder of my term."
In the same , Biden also named his Vice President, Kamala Harris, as the successor for the Democratic presidential nomination.
"Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this," he concluded.
The news comes after Biden tested positive for Covid-19 earlier in the week, just hours before his scheduled appearance at the annual UnidosUS conference in Las Vegas, Nevada.
How long has Joe Biden been in office?
Before serving as president, Biden served as vice president under Barack Obama from January 2009 to January 2017.
A few years later, in 2020, Biden ran against Donald Trump in one of history's most controversial elections.
He ultimately beat Trump after securing the 20 electoral votes he needed from Pennsylvania.
Biden was then officially sworn in on January 20, 2021, with now-Vice President Kamala Harris, and will be up for re-election in 2024.
On April 1, 2023, Joe Biden officially filed to run for re-election in 2024.

Since 1977, he has been married to educator Dr. Jill Biden.
Before his marriage to Jill, he and teacher Neilia Hunter were married from 1966 to 1972.
Tragically, Neilia died in a car crash with their one-year-old daughter, Naomi.
Biden's sons, Beau and Hunter, were also in the car at the time but survived.
