Facebook is making a tiny change it hopes will make a big difference to the internet

Social network reveals results of obsessive investigation into an instantly familiar feature

It's the little things that make a difference in life, especially if you work at Facebook.

The social network has revealed the results of a painstaking investigation into the "like button" - and it's decided things need to change.

It's decided to make an alteration which might elude everyone but the most dedicated Facebookers by removing the letter F from the like button and replacing it with a thumbs up instead.

This tiny button appears on millions of websites and allow people to show support for the site by adding it to their list of Facebook 'likes'.

"The Like button is one of our most iconic products with over 10 billion views each day across millions of websites," Facebook engineers wrote in a blog.

"The Like and Share buttons both use the Facebook 'f' logo today. Our hypothesis was that more people would understand the thumbs up icon on the Like button, so we conducted qualitative and quantitative tests to measure them side-by-side.

"The results revealed an increase in engagement, so we are switching the Like button from the Facebook 'f' logo to the thumbs up icon."

The new like button will roll out slowly across the internet in the coming days and weeks, although it remains to be seen if anyone will see the difference at first.

However, this tiny logo is set to play a bigger part in our online lives as it will integrate with Facebook's Instant Articles system, meaning you'll see it at the bottom of lots of blogs and news sites over the next few years.

Here's what tech site The Verge had to say about the chance: "It's a mixed bag. The thumbs-up icon makes more sense than the Facebook logo, but the old design drew a nice visual distinction between the button and the number of likes.

"The new design puts everything in a single blue rectangle. Now it kind of looks as if "like" is an approximation — this page has, like, 68K!"
