It comes as an Arctic blast sweeps across the country from north to south, bringing with it frost, ice, and fat snowflakes.

The warnings stretch from today until Thursday.

The warnings today for ice cover the northwest of England, much of Wales, and some of the West Midlands including Stoke-on-Trent.

It will remain in place until 10 am tomorrow.

Another warning is in place for snow and ice covering parts of Scotland including the Highlands, Outer Hebrides and also Northern Ireland.

The snow and ice warning is in place until midnight.

Tomorrow there are four warnings in place, stretching across pretty much the entire UK.

In the south of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland there are snow and ice warnings.

The South's warning remains in place until early Thursday morning.

Parts of Scotland should brace for a freeze as some ice warnings remain in place until late afternoon New Year's Eve.

There are also ice warnings in place tomorrow across the Midlands, Wales and the North.

However, the northwest and southwest of England, as well as parts of Wales and Western Scotland narrowly escape with a warning-free outlook - although Brits should keep their eyes peeled.

And on New Year's Eve warnings remain in place across most of England and Scotland.

Warnings for snow urge anyone travelling on roads to take care, adding that public transport could be affected by the flakes.

And ice warnings say icy surfaces can be dangerous for some drivers, and anyone walking out and about should take extra care due to the slippery conditions.

The Met Office says tonight's temperatures "will tumble towards freezing, perhaps getting as low as -10°C".

Drivers have been urged to stay off the roads, with treacherous conditions predicted by the AA as thawing snow turns to ice.

It comes days after Storm Bella battered the country with 106mph gusts and heavy downpours over Christmas.

In some areas of the UK, flooding was so severe that water sports enthusiasts kayaked down submerged roads.

And there's no let-up for those worst-affected by the deluge, with more extreme weather ahead.

Conditions expected to be challenging until New Year's Day.

Up to six inches could fall in central and southern England tomorrow evening, Met Office forecasters say.

"It's cold and there's some sleet and snow to go with it," a Met Office spokesperson told Sun Online.

"On Wednesday afternoon, we will see a swathe of wet weather crossing southern England and Wales and there is a possibility it will bring some heavy snow in the latter part of Wednesday and overnight on Thursday.

"The warning stretches as far as London, so we could see some disruptive and significant snow building up.
