Gunman on the run from the cops for shooting his ex-partner in the leg more than a decade ago is arrested on a tropical island
After spending eight years in hiding, John Soares was imprisoned in the UK but escaped the country AGAIN after being released on bail
A GUNMAN who twice went on the run after shooting his ex-partner in the leg was today arrested on a tropical island.
Police today revealed that John Soares has been arrested on the tropical Indian Ocean island of Reunion - 6000 miles away from his former home.
Soares pistol whipped his then-partner in 2003 but went on the run for eight years - before going to prison for breaching the conditions of his bail.
Following court delays, he was again released on bail in February 2012 - Soares then surrendered his passport but still managed to escape abroad.
He fled the country before he could face trial and was found guilty by a jury sitting at Maidstone Crown Court in May 2012.
The below video, provided by , documents Soares' time on the run.
She said: "He's a very dangerous man, he is very dangerous for everyone, for society."
Soares posted images on social media which documented his time on the run: standing outside Downing Street, holidays in Europe, his wedding day in Bulgaria, working as a diver in France, Spain and Romania, partying, drinking and dining out.
Former Special Branch officer and crime lecturer Dr David Lowe said: "From what I've seen, he's being quite brazen about this. It looks like he is boasting."
Neighbours said French police were called out several times and heard him shouting with his new wife.
One said: "Sometimes you heard them screaming and she was shrieking, she was scared."
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said Soares was released on bail in 2012 because he had not applied to extend his time in custody.
They also blamed delays in arranging for Martine Almansa to give evidence from France.
Intelligence fed back to Police revealed he was in Reunion - a French-owned island - and he was apprehended under a European Arrest Warrant.
