Pro-EU Tory Ken Clarke calls on MPs to ignore EU referendum result and follow their own judgement
Former Chancellor said vote not legally binding and MPs shouldn't have to follow it, despite majority voting to Leave
PRO-EU Tory big beast Ken Clarke suggested MPs ignore the EU referendum result yesterday and follow their own judgement instead.
The Europhile former chancellor said the historic vote wasn’t legally binding and MPs shouldn’t have to follow it.
In the Commons yesterday the MP asked David Cameron if he agreed that when votes come up in Parliament – MPs follow their personal judgment – and not the will of a democratic majority.
His views were echoed by London Labour MP Jim Dowd who spoke out against the Brexit result after most of his constituents voted to Remain.
Describing referendums as “ridiculous” Mr Clarke suggested last week’s result was “broad guidance of a plebiscite”.
But he was slapped down by the PM who said: “This House should back the will of the British people.”
