Why has Pornhub removed all unverified content?

Canadian-owned Pornhub deleted over ten million videos from its site - around 80 per cent of its overall uploads - in under two days following allegations of hosting child abuse content.

The videos were all from unverified users, only leaving uploads from known sources.

Since launching in 2007, videos can be uploaded by anyone who has signed up to Pornhub, leading to millions of amateur content.

But the published allegations on December 4 that the site monetised from child rapes and revenge pornography among other unruly footage.

The report claims that the mother of a 15-year-old girl who went missing from Florida later found her daughter on Pornhub in 58 different sex videos.

The paper also alleged that the site had avoided punishment, despite failing to warn the authorities of the content.

Since, Pornhub has looked to ensure that there are no videos containing child sexual abuse.

In a statement, they said: "Any assertion that we allow CSAM (child sexual abuse material) is irresponsible and flagrantly untrue.

What content is allowed to be uploaded?

Pornhub revealed that only content from its official partners or users signed up to its Model Program initiative will be available on its site.

The porn website's parent company MindGeek also said: "Every piece of Pornhub content is from verified uploaders, a requirement that platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Snapchat and Twitter have yet to institute."

Yet, they hope to allow other users to submit their videos that will be posted following 'successful completion of identification protocol'.

Pornhub also plan to improve its content moderation with the newly established Red Team, where all uploads will be reviewed manually by humans along with automated detection technologies.

Have Visa and Mastercard stopped card payments to Pornhub?

Two of the biggest card suppliers faced immediate calls to halt payments to Pornhub following the publication of the report.

Mastercard have since stopped credit card payments to Pornhub following its own investigation that found violations of standards prohibiting unlawful conduct - while they will also look into other sites for possible illegal content.

Visa has also revealed they are suspending card payments to the pornography website as they continue their own review.
