Epstein is an author whose most recent work is Gallimaufry: A Collection of Essays, Reviews, Bits.

The 83-year-old Epstein was the editor of The American Scholar magazine from 1975 to 1997.

He was born on January 9, 1937, in Chicago.

Epstein gave Dr Biden some advice in a op-ed published on December 11.

"A wise man once said that no one should call himself 'Dr.' unless he has delivered a child. Think about it, Dr. Jill, and forthwith drop the doc."

Epstein would later add: "The Ph.D. may once have held prestige, but that has been diminished by the erosion of seriousness and the relaxation of standards in university education generally, at any rate outside the sciences."
