Iraqi Prime Minister calls for celebration as Falluja is recovered from ISIS fighters

Army regains control of last ISIS stronghold just under two months after announcing plans to rid major city of extremists

IRAQI Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi has urged his country to rejoice following the recapture of Falluja from ISIS fighters.

Abadi’s words came after the nation’s army revealed it had regained control of the last ISIS stronghold in the city.

The Prime Minister appeared on television waving an Iraqi flag outside Falluja’s main hospital.

He said the flag would also be raised in Mosul – the biggest Iraqi city held by ISIS – soon enough.

Speaking to cameras, Abadi said: "Today our troops liberated Falluja while at the same time our troops are currently fighting in Mosul.

"There is no place for Isis [IS] in Iraq. We will chase them everywhere.

“As we promised to raise the flag high in Falluja, we will raise it in Mosul soon with the will of our heroes.

“I call on Iraqis to celebrate this day."

ISIS seized control of Falluja two and a half years ago, in January 2014.

The Iraqi government’s victory comes just under two months after it launched an operation to retake the city in May.

According to the nation's army, at least 1,800 militants were killed in the operation.

Falluja was the first Iraqi city to fall to ISIS.

In recent weeks, the extremists have lost control of several strongholds in both Iraq and Syria.
