The detention centre in the Red Rock Canyon town of Pahrump opened in 2010 for prisoners awaiting trial. Some are held for three years.

Sandford, who has Asperger’s, is kept behind a strengthened perimeter fence, razor wire and 108 security cameras. Temperatures hit 45C last week.

A source said: “There are a lot of illegal immigrants and many prisoners are Mexicans alleged to have committed gang crimes.” Sandford is accused of trying to grab a cop’s gun to kill presidential hopeful Trump on June 18 at a rally in Las Vegas.
