PRESSURE MOUNTS FOR SCOTS VOTE
Nicola Sturgeon reveals plans are underway to draw up laws to allow a second independence referendum
First Minister says that a second referendum is ‘on the table’ after Scotland overwhelmingly votes to stay in EU
SCOTTISH First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has announced that a second independence referendum is "on the table".
Speaking after a cabinet meeting held in Edinburgh, the SNP politician said: "A second independence referendum is clearly an option that requires to be on the table and it is on the table.
"And to ensure that option is a deliverable one steps will be taken to ensure that the necessary legislation is in place."
She also said that she will seek "immediate discussions" with EU chiefs in Brussels to "protect Scotland's place in the EU.
Sturgeon's comments come the day after she announced that a second independence vote is "highly likely".
She is set to make a statement to MSPs on Tuesday.
Calls for the vote have come after 52 per cent of voters decided that Britain should leave the EU.
But Scotland overwhelmingly voted to remain as part of the EU, along with London and Northern Ireland.
A massive 62 per cent of Scots voted to stay a part of the European Union.
Sturgeon said that it was "democratically unacceptable" that Scotland was being forced to leave the EU.
The defeat for the Remain campaign caused David Cameron to step down as Prime Minister yesterday.
