brexit mutiny fears

Pro-EU MPs in secret ‘plot’ to scupper vote to leave the single market and force free movement on Brits

Look out for 490 of 650 MPs in the House of Commons who are pro-EU - many have privately warned they'll battle to stop the UK leaving the single market despite Thursday’s historic vote

PRO-EU MPs could plot a series of Commons mutinies to block Brexit.

Around 490 of the 650 MPs elected in 2015 are in favour of staying in Europe.

And many have privately warned they will battle to stop the UK leaving the single market despite Thursday’s historic vote.

Unravelling Britain from the European Union will require dozens of votes in Parliament.

This will provide plenty of opportunities for pro-EU MPs to sabotage them. Brexiteers fear if the Commons blocks an exit from the single market, in a “reverse Maastricht” style move, Britain would still have to accept the EU’s free movement rules.

Last night commentator Matthew Parris said the process would become a “shambles”.

He said the overwhelming majority of Westminster MPs believe quitting the EU is a mistake.

And he questioned how MPs could either “vote against their consciences” or defy the Referendum result.

He predicted SNP, Labour and Tory pro-EU politicians could defy the will of the electorate.

This could take the form of wrecking key votes on issues like trade while Britain negotiates Brexit.

Mr Parris warned major bust-ups and fighting lie ahead.

And he fears the Conservative Party could “break under the strain”.

The former Tory MP also said it was likely a General Election would be called in spring 2017.
