The Democracy Institute, which carried out the poll of more than 1,000 voters, said the paper’s impact echoed its effect on the 1992 General Election.

Director Patrick Basham added: “It appears a Leave victory would owe a fair amount to The Sun campaign’s resonance among working class, male, and older voters especially.”

Figures also showed new migration statistics influenced 28 per cent of those intending to vote Leave.

There were positive reviews for TV performances by Leave campaigners Michael Gove on Sky News and Boris Johnson on the BBC.

These each inspired one in ten Leave voters.

Nearly one in seven opted Out due to the Project Fear campaign run by the Remain side.

The dad who mauled David Cameron over the immigration crisis in an ITV debate hailed The Sun.

BA worker Harry Boparai, 41, of Ashford, Surrey, said: “My smile is bigger than the Cheshire Cat’s. This result shows what people power can achieve.

“The Sun has been a big part of changing this country’s future path for the better and giving normal families, like mine, hope.”

Teacher Helen Sherratt, 22, of Stoke-on-Trent said: “The Sun’s Independence Day front page was so powerful it helped me make up my mind.”
